Bike and Build cycles through Lawrence on way across the country

A group of 32 cyclists with minds for affordable housing made their way through Lawrence on Tuesday.

The cyclists are a part of Bike and Build, a nonprofit organization that involves groups riding cross country, raising awareness for national housing issues and chipping in on construction projects along the way, said team leader Casey Moran.

“We’re very committed to providing physical labor and actually getting projects done,” she said. “Also, money is a huge part of the issue, finding funding for people to get the chance to live a healthy, sustainable lifestyle in an adequate home.”

The group’s ride began May 25 in Virginia, and they’ll finish Aug. 4 in Oregon, Moran said. They’ll pass through a dozen states along the way, riding nearly 4,000 miles.

To date, the 32 cyclists have raised $149,865 for their cause, according to their website.

The group stopped in Kansas City on Monday and worked on a building project, Moran said. On Wednesday they’ll cycle to Manhattan for another day of work.

In Lawrence the group stayed at the Ecumenical Campus Ministries building, 1204 Oread Ave., Moran said. While in town they had a chance to relax for a bit and speak with a Kansas University professor of architecture on the topic of housing and the design process.

“Riding to Lawrence was a very short day,” Moran said. “It was nice because people were excited to explore Kansas.”

We are happy to be hosting Bike & Build !!! The 30 rides will depart to their next destination tomorrow morning.
