40 years ago: South Park trees destroyed in seemingly random attack

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 16, 1975:

Five trees in South Park had been destroyed over the weekend and 10 others severely damaged by a man who had apparently walked through the park tearing at the foliage and branches with his hands. Lawrence police arrested Marvin L. Tarpy, 27, 1316 Connecticut, shortly after receiving a phone call from a witness. Tarpy was booked on charges of criminal destruction to property in the Douglas County Jail and released on $1,500 bond. George Osborne, Lawrence Parks Department superintendent, said five redbuds, a magnolia, a crabapple, a sugar maple, two hawthorne, and five little-leaf linden trees had been either damaged or destroyed. He added that replacement costs on the redbuds, which were destroyed, would be $30 each, and the cost to replace the heavily-damaged lindens if necessary would range from $132 to $145.
