Concert benefiting Pet World set for Monday evening

First Christian Church will play host to a benefit concert on Monday evening for Pet World, which suffered a large fire on May 25, causing the 27-year-old Lawrence pet store to close its doors.

Kansas University and local classical musicians will perform for the public at First Christian Church, 1000 Kentucky St., from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. A reception will follow the concert, according to the event’s website.

Attendees are encouraged to make donations, which will go toward Pet World’s rebuilding, the event’s website says.

Pet World co-owner Sherry Emerson said Thursday that the concert is a legitimate fundraising event, but that Pet World did not take part in organizing the event. According to the event’s website, the concert was “voluntarily organized by animal-loving citizens who are not financially-related to Pet World, nor having profit from Pet World’s business.”
