Lawrence man remains hospitalized but in fair condition following head-on collision Sunday

A 58-year-old Lawrence man remains in fair condition after suffering serious injuries in a head-on collision Sunday, a Stormont Vail Hospital representative said Wednesday.

Douglas Hitt was driving westbound on U.S. Highway 40 around 11:15 a.m. Sunday when an eastbound car, driven by 27-year-old Melissa Weisgerber, collided head on with his vehicle, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Steve Lewis said.

Weisgerber, of Topeka, had just collided with another westbound vehicle, driven by 38-year-old Jack Greever, of Lawrence, Lewis said. The impact of that crash caused Weisgeber to careen off Greever’s vehicle and into Hitt’s.

Hitt was taken by air ambulance to Stormont-Vail in Topeka after the accident, and his condition had improved to “fair” by Monday. Weisgerber and her passenger, Rebecca Dodds, 33, of Topeka, were taken by ground ambulances to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released the same day, LMH spokeswoman Belinda Rehmer said Monday. Greever was not injured.

Hitt remained at Stormont-Vail Wednesday afternoon.
