40 years ago: Presidential candidates Jimmy Carter to visit Kansas

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 4, 1975:

  • Jimmy Carter, who had declared his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination for the 1976 election, was to return to Kansas this weekend for a fundraising event. Carter, who had addressed the state Democratic Party’s Washington Day dinner in Topeka the previous March, was to hold a barbeque picnic at Lake Shawnee Saturday evening. The Topeka event was part of a four-day campaign swing through Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa for Carter, who had campaigned in 35 states since announcing his presidential bid in mid-December, 1974.
  • After a six-day standoff, Lawrence District 497 teacher contract negotiations had been brought to a tentative settlement. Teacher negotiators had presented a proposal to add an additional half step to their pay scale using money which had been offered to the district. Ratification of the agreement by teachers was expected to be conducted by mail and completed by the end of the month.
