Kinedyne to close Lawrence plant; move jobs to Alabama

A longtime Lawrence manufacturer will close its production center in the East Hills Business Park later this year and ship the jobs to Alabama.

Kinedyne, a New Jersey-based manufacturer of cargo straps and other similar products, confirmed it has decided to close its Lawrence plant “later this summer” and move the work to a plant in Prattville, Ala.

It was unclear the total number of jobs that will be lost as part of the move. Data compiled by the Economic Development Corporation of Lawrence & Douglas County recently showed that Kinedyne had 93 employees in Lawrence. The company said 23 production and warehouse positions will be displaced by the closure by late summer. An undisclosed number of office employees will remain in Lawrence until December 2016. But the company confirmed those positions will be moved to Alabama after 2016.

The company said in a statement that it made the decision to close the Lawrence facility to gain better operating efficiencies.

“The decision to close the Lawrence-based business was absolutely no reflection of the employees or the work they produced,” the company said in a statement. “The decision was based upon factual data and a business need to have all of our manufacturing in one location.”

Kinedyne has operated in Lawrence since 1989, when it purchased Lawrence-based Aeroquip Corporation. The company was one of the first businesses to locate in the East Hills Business Park. Its building is located at the entrance to the park, and the company said it has listed the building for sale.

The company said it is holding job fairs for employees, seeking partnerships with area companies interested in hiring Kinedyne employees, and offering some job retraining classes.

“Lawrence employees have made a significant contribution to the company’s overall growth during the past 25 years, and we will always be grateful for their hard work and dedication.”

The company said it did not have an exact date for the plant’s closure. It said the closure is dependent on significant upgrades being completed at the Prattville facility. Kinedyne didn’t provide information on why the Pratville location was chosen over the Lawrence facility to become the company’s primary production center.
