25 years ago: KU grad takes marriage proposal on the road

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 23, 1990:

Recent Kansas University graduate David Harger today decided to take an unusual approach to proposing marriage to his girlfriend. Harger, 22, placed 20 large signs along Sixth Street, just west of Wakarusa Drive, where he expected Linda Rooney to drive on her way back from her job in Topeka. In old-style Burma Shave style, the first 15 signs collectively spelled out the message, “Linda Rooney, Linda Rooney, Be mine till the sun don’t shine, till time stands still. When today is a memory, I’ll be in love with you.” Four large signs subsequently asked, “Will you marry me?” The largest sign, reading “I love you,” followed. Harger parked his car at the end of the series and held a sign asking Linda to stop. Harger waited about an hour for Rooney to drive by. “People would drive by every 10 minutes to see if she’d come by yet,” he told a reporter. “One lady drove by honking and waving, then drove straight to Dillon’s and bought a big bunch of flowers for me to give to Linda.” The story had a happy ending as Rooney stopped her car in bewilderment and accepted Harger’s more formal proposal. “I didn’t pay any attention to the cars around me,” she said. “It’s a wonder I didn’t get hit.”
