Haskell secures $1.2 million grant to help disadvantaged students

Haskell Indian Nations University received a $1.2 million federal grant to continue a program that helps students from disadvantaged backgrounds, the university announced Tuesday.

The U.S. Department of Education TRIO Program grant will fund Haskell’s Student Support Services program for five years, according to Haskell. It’s the third consecutive grant for the program, which provides academic support and resources for first-generation college students, low-income students or students with disabilities.

The centerpiece of the newly funded proposal is an Educational Pathway Plan, which focuses on helping students make the transition from high school to college by providing tailored services, events and seminars each year of college, Haskell said in its announcement.

Student Support Services serves 175 students a year, according to Haskell. Of Haskell’s roughly 800 students — all members of federally recognized tribes — 83 percent receive Federal Pell Grants (for students with financial need), and 65 percent qualify as first-generation students.
