Lawrence man charged with drug distribution within 1,000 feet of Liberty Memorial Central Middle School

A 41-year-old Lawrence man arrested Saturday was charged Monday with two counts of distribution of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school.

James Brandon Hull is accused of selling illegal drugs from his residence at 1344 Massachusetts St., just north of Liberty Memorial Central Middle School. He is also accused of using a cellphone to arrange the drug deals.

According to the Lawrence Police Department’s call log, an officer responding to the scene called for backup just before 3 p.m. Saturday. Hull was booked into the Douglas County Jail by 3:30 p.m. that day, according to jail logs.

Hull has previous diversions on a charge of domestic battery and criminal damage to property. However, because of his successful completion of his diversion agreement, the charges were dismissed.

During his first appearance Monday, Hull asked for a lower bond than the $25,000 set by the judge issuing a warrant for his arrest on Saturday. Hull said that he has spent five years at the same address across the street from the middle school and holds a job in construction.

“I’m asking to reduce (the bond) so that I don’t lose my house and job,” Hull said.

Douglas County Judge Pro Tem James George ultimately kept Hull’s bond at $25,000 because of the nature of the charges. Hull is scheduled to next appear in court on Wednesday.

Hull remains in the Douglas County Jail.
