Lawrence City Commission reopening study of new police facility

? Lawrence city commissioners will hold a study session Monday to reopen discussions about facility needs for the city police department and to discuss community policing in general.

Last year, the city proposed building a new $28 million headquarters facility that would have been funded with a 0.2 percent sales tax. But Lawrence voters rejected the sales tax proposal in November, 52-48 percent.

The police headquarters has been sharing space with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at the Joint Law Enforcement Center near the county courthouse since 1976. In response to growing needs for additional space, the department opened an annex on Bob Billings Parkway in 1999.

An agenda for the meeting, posted on the city’s website, calls for a presentation on the history of the department’s facility needs. It also calls for discussion of the department’s use of body cameras, and of regular annual reports about the department’s record for racial profiling and other bias-based policing.

The study session is open to the public, and commissioners plan to take public comment at the meeting.

The study session is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. Monday in the commission chambers at City Hall.
