Letter: Rights have limits

To the editor:

Some Kansas legislators and “gun-rights” groups are currently trying to enact what they call “constitutional carry” (SB45).  It’s a twisted use of “constitutional,” even for Kansas’ ruling faction, as the bill intends to “correct” (or rather erase) the Constitution’s Second Amendment words about “a well-regulated militia.”

As one of their clique said, SB45 will ensure Kansans’ “right” to carry a firearm “without having to beg for government permission.” Maybe our legislators will extend the same “right” to drivers. Or do even they realize that would make our streets unsafe and endanger people’s lives?

Probably better the Kansas Legislature sticks to the constitutional issues for which they’re so eminently qualified, starting with the First Amendment.  Since the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, perhaps Kansas’ wise legislators will “restore” the right (stolen from us by “government”) to falsely yell “Fire!” in a crowded theater.
