100 years ago: ‘Jayhawker’ basketball team invades Manhattan

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 28, 1915:

  • “The Jayhawker basketball five will invade the ‘Aggie’ camp for two games tonight and Friday. Both contests will be played in Manhattan on the Farmers’ Court, which will give the ‘Aggie’ team a slight advantage over the Jayhawkers. Coach Hamilton looks for another crimson and blue victory over the farmers in spite of this handicap, as comparative dope shows the Jayhawkers to be fifty per cent stronger than the ‘Aggie’ five…. However, three members of the Kansas basketball squad will not be able to play against the ‘Aggies,’ and will not be taken on the trip. These include Kaiser, Cole and Heath. Kaiser and Cole are both tied down to Lawrence on account of examinations in school work, while Heath is suffering from a badly sprained wrist which was injured in practice last night.”
  • “This morning at about 8:10 o’clock a call came to the police station asking for the officers to come to the home of W. A. Churchill, 1210 Ohio street. The persons calling said that there was a man in delirium there. The officers hurried to the scene as soon as possible and when they got there they found that Mr. Churchill had tried to commit suicide by cutting his throat and stabbing himself over the heart…. A physician was immediately called and the bleeding stopped. At about 2 o’clock this afternoon he regained consciousness. It is thought that despondency was the cause of the attempted suicide. Mr. Churchill has not been employed for several months. He is an experienced bookkeeper and has worked in several of the offices in Lawrence. The last place he worked was at the Watkins National bank.”
  • “Sidney Cattle and Henry Grigg, the two men who were arrested Tuesday charged with peddling without a license, were brought before Judge Abach this morning in Police court and pleaded guilty to the charge. They were fined $25.50 each. They paid the fine and were instructed to be on their way as soon as the next train pulled into town. There was evidence in the case that the men were obtaining money under false pretenses but there was not absolute proof.”
  • “The temperature fell lower last night in Lawrence than it has gone for a number of years. The official report of the temperature early this morning was nine and one-half degrees below zero…. The driving wind which accompanied the snow yesterday died down about seven o’clock last night and the mercury fell steadily until early this morning. The temperature rose rapidly this morning until it reached eight degrees and remained there the most of the day. Continued cold weather is promised.”
  • “The coldest weather in three years and the coldest on this date in the 28 years of weather bureau records is recorded in Kansas today. At 7:30 o’clock this morning the government thermometer in Topeka registered 9 below…. Practically the entire state is covered with snow.”
  • “Topeka. – A bill that made it legal to sell a rifle or shotgun, but practically made it illegal to carry one was passed by the senate today. It was introduced by Senator Waegener and prohibits hunting upon any property without the written consent of the owner…. The bill prevents small boys hunting rabbits or squirrels unless they do it on their own property or have the written consent of the man who owns the land. The law is so drastic that a man or boy walking down a public highway who may shoot at a rabbit can be fined unless he has the consent of the abutting property owner.”
