40 years ago: Natural gas rates on the rise, but warm weather eases budget strain

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 27, 1975:

Effective this week, natural gas rates in Lawrence were increasing by more than 4 1/2 cents per 1,000 cubic feet. The increase was part of a 4.29-cent field rate adjustment for Cities Service Gas Co., supplier to Kansas Public Service Gas Co. which served Lawrence. The adjustment had been made by the Federal Power Commission, according to Bill Salome, vice president and general manager for the local firm. Under an agreement with the Lawrence City Commission, such rate increases were passed to the consumer at a rate of 1.08 cents for every one-cent increase to the local firm. Fortunately for Lawrence residents, they were able to rely less on their furnaces this week as 50-degree weather came into the area. The National Weather Service said the highs today in the mid to upper 50s were to continue through the weekend, with little precipitation expected.
