Off the Beaten Plate: Halum cheese at Aladdin Cafe

We’ve never met a cheese we didn’t like, and the Halum appetizer at Aladdin Cafe (our first experience with the variety) was no exception.

Halum cheese at Aladdin Cafe, 1021 Massachusetts St.

This firm, springy goat cheese originated in Cyprus, and is widely eaten throughout the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions. At Aladdin Cafe, it’s grilled (a high melting point allows the Halum to retain its shape) and topped with thyme and sesame seeds, plus a drizzle of olive oil.

Where to get it: Aladdin Cafe, 1021 Massachusetts St.

What you’ll pay: $5.99

Try it with: A warm slice of pita bread. Each order of Halum comes with a plateful. Cheesy, starchy heaven.

Also on the menu: Plenty of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean fare, from appetizers (like baba ghanouj and hummus) to soups, salads and more. The restaurant boasts more than 10 vegetarian entrees and sandwiches, though meat lovers should appreciate the many shish-kabob offerings.
