40 years ago: Sunflower expansion joins list of upcoming construction projects

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 19, 1975:

A recently announced expansion project at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, combined with other public sector projects, was expected to give Lawrence a boost over the economic woes being experienced in many other parts of the country. Local officials believed that Lawrence could even suffer a labor shortage in the near future, in contrast with other areas, especially those relying on the automobile industry, which were experiencing 14 percent unemployment. The $50 to $100 million project at Sunflower joined a list of upcoming projects including the construction of 50 county bridges and the Massachusetts Street bridge in Lawrence; two new buildings at Kansas University; an expansion at Lawrence Memorial Hospital; construction work at Haskell Indian Junior College; and a new Kansas Power and Light plant at St. Marys. Lawrence contractors, however, were skeptical that local firms would build the Sunflower project, saying the work would probably be done by national firms specializing in industrial construction.
