Huslig gives lift to Veritas girls

? Veritas Christian sophomore Tori Huslig only played one half in Saturday’s girls basketball game against Derby. It was all the Eagles needed from her in a 50-39 victory at the Eudora Community Center.

In the second quarter, Huslig scored 22 of the Eagles’ 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Defensively, she grabbed nine steals in the period, helping Veritas take a 33-11 halftime lead before she left because of a prior commitment.

“She’s a good player,” Veritas coach Kevin Shelton said. “We’re excited that she gave us what she did in the first half. It was a challenge for us in the second half, but we told every girl at halftime that someone else was going to have to step up. That’s going to be big for us to develop more players.”

The Eagles (6-3) were tied 9-9 at the beginning of the second quarter when Huslig scored eight points in 17 seconds with two steals in the backcourt, a three-pointer, a layup-and-the-foul with the free throw and another layup.

Derby had 30 first-half turnovers, with 13 steals by Huslig, and it struggled to shoot when it moved the ball past halfcourt.

“That’s how we like to play when we can do it,” Shelton said of his team’s pressure defense. “We knew we had an opportunity today to improve at that, and I thought we did that really well in that first half especially.”

In the second half, the Eagles had their own struggles with turnovers, 16 of them, but freshman Emma Wilson, sophomore Holly Scott and senior Macie Dressler made enough shots to keep their lead mostly in double-digits.

Sophomore Alyssa Krestan led Veritas with seven rebounds while Dressler scored eight points, Scott had seven and Wilson pitched in six.
