1 person injured in rollover accident at Sixth and Missouri

One person was transported to the hospital after a rollover accident at Sixth and Missouri streets about 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Sgt. Myrone Grady of the Lawrence Police Department said the driver of a Acura that was westbound on Sixth Street got his boot caught in the accelerator, causing him to lose control of his car, cross the eastbound lanes and hit a tree and a fire hydrant before striking another vehicle and flipping over onto its roof.

Grady said the vehicle that was struck, a Honda CR-V, was stopped at a stop sign on Missouri Street at Sixth Street when it was hit. A male passenger in the CR-V was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with minor injuries; Grady said the accident “looks worse than it is.”

Traffic was diverted south onto Arkansas Street at Sixth Street while police investigated the accident and crews worked to clean up the debris and tow the vehicles. The intersection has been reopened.
