Nina Friesen, a senior at Lawrence High School, has won best of show in the “Kansans…As Talented As You Think!” art contest. Sponsored by the Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas, the annual competition honors the work of high school students.

Friesen’s work, along with those of other statewide finalists, are now on display at the Brown vs. Board of Education museum in Topeka, and will also be featured at the annual banquet of the Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas in Topeka on Jan. 30.

Her winning photograph, “Splattered Stars” (a self-portrait onto which she spray-painted touches of red, white and blue) also earned the “Freedom Award.”

Friesen shares the best of show title with Allison Manley, a junior at Marysville High School, and her work “Hope and Change.” Cierra Campbell, a student at Free State High School, won the black-and-white photography category. Alice Kelsey, a Lawrence High School student, won the mixed-media category.
