Almost 76,000 Kansans have signed up through Health Insurance Marketplace; next enrollment deadline nearing

With another month left before the last open enrollment deadline, about 75,900 Kansans selected or automatically re-enrolled in a health plan using the Affordable Care Act’s Health Insurance Marketplace, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

About 80 percent of Kansas consumers were eligible for financial assistance, the report said.

Last year, with a dysfunctional website making things difficult, a total of 57,000 Kansans signed up through the entire enrollment period.

Nationally, 6.8 million people in the 37 states who use the federally run marketplace signed up or re-enrolled in the first two months. Last year brought a total of 5.4 million.

Those who are signed up by Jan. 15 will receive their coverage beginning Feb. 1. The final open enrollment deadline to sign up for 2015 coverage is Feb. 15.

“Things have been pretty steady,” said Jordan Rickabaugh, the eastern Kansas navigator coordinator for the Kansas Association for the Medically Underserved. “It sounds like navigators in Lawrence and surrounding areas have had a lot of appointments.”

Rickabaugh previously told the Journal-World she believes enrollment is up thanks to a functional website, increased awareness and higher penalties for those who don’t sign up by Feb. 15, when the open enrollment period ends.

The Cover Kansas Navigator Project will hold a health insurance marketplace enrollment event from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St. Certified navigators from the Lawrence area will be on hand to assist individuals and families with the enrollment process.

People can also find other opportunities for assistance by visiting InsureKS.org.

Rickabaugh encouraged those still looking for a plan to act quickly. As the deadline nears, she said, navigators’ schedules become busier and call centers have longer wait times.

Attendees should bring basic information about their family and household, including:

• Names, birth dates and Social Security numbers for everyone in the household.

• Projected household income for 2015.

• Tax information, such as filing status and number of dependents.

• Immigration documentation and supporting identification numbers.

• An email address will be required to create an online marketplace account. Assistance can be provided for those who need to create one.
