Electrical outages on Monday leave hundreds without power

Over 250 Westar Energy customers were without power in Lawrence Monday afternoon after issues arose in two neighborhoods, officials said.

Gina Penzig, a spokeswoman for the energy company, said power went down for around 230 customers near 21st and Pinewood streets at 1:40 p.m.

While the company was able to restore power to customers by 2:10 p.m., technicians were unable to determine the cause of the outage, Penzig said.

Just before 2 p.m. power was also lost for 27 customers near 11th and New Jersey streets, Penzig said. That outage was caused by a squirrel.

“Around this time of year they start looking for warmth, and they end up closing the circuit,” she said. “I’m not exactly sure if he made it, but the squirrels normally don’t make it.”

Power was restored to those 27 customers by 2:30 p.m., Penzig said.
