Free State girls reach 7-0 with victory at O-North

Cameryn Thomas (10) tries to get away from Lexy Watts as Free State girls played Olathe North Friday in Olathe. Free State won, 63-35.

? Most opponents know by now that Free State High’s girls basketball team has two highly productive starters in sophomore Madison Piper and senior Sarah Coversup.

That doesn’t mean they have a solution for the Firebirds’ multitalented leaders.

Piper scored 15 of her game-high 27 points in the third quarter, Coversup delivered a double-double (15 points, 14 rebounds), and FSHS remained unbeaten Friday night with a 63-35 victory at Olathe North.

Afterward, the Firebirds (No. 8 in Class 6A, 7-0) could be heard down the hallway from their locker room, screaming “seven-and-oh,” on repeat. Piper, who also pulled down seven rebounds, said the team’s go-to post player, Coversup, initiated the chant.

“She’s one of the people who gets us excited for the game, one of the people who brings energy,” Piper said of the 6-foot-1 senior who at times feasts on the offensive glass, even if that means collecting her own misses. “It’s just fun to watch her.”

Coversup, who arrived at FSHS as a transfer this year, said setting a tone is part of her job description.

“If I’m ready to go and excited, I know I’ll go out there and do good,” the forward said. “If I do good, it gets my team pumped up.”

Coversup scored Free State’s first six points, and she and Piper accounted for Free State’s first 25 points of the first half, before junior Hannah Walter snagged an offensive rebound and scored a put-back with 40 seconds left in the second quarter, giving FSHS a 27-11 lead at the break.

A force in the paint for the Firebirds, Coversup had a double-double in the first half alone, with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Though O-North hung around with its top-10 visitor early, Free State’s second-quarter defense held the Eagles to 1-of-9 shooting. In the third quarter, Piper nailed three of her five three-pointers on the night and got some help from freshman guard Cameryn Thomas, who scored six of her eight points in the quarter.

While Piper, Coversup and Thomas scored 50 of the team’s points, every player on the floor constantly moved the ball to make sure the offense worked.

“We have two very dynamic scorers,” Free State coach Bryan Duncan said. “It’s no secret. And just as important is we have a very unselfish team. Those two are very unselfish themselves, and … it comes within structure. They don’t try to force things. If anything, we ask Madison to be more aggressive with the ball. So I think the biggest thing is people don’t care who scores.”

After the win, Piper and Coversup saw their stat lines and playfully argued about who had the better night, each championing the other.

Said Piper: “We go into every game knowing we need to play hard, but at the same time we need to have some fun. Because you can’t just go out there and go through the motions. You need a little fun to get some spark.”

The Firebirds will play at undefeated Leavenworth, No. 1 in Class 5A, on Tuesday.
