Kimball, Ingram, Frye file for Lawrence school board

Two incumbents and one would-be newcomer have filed for one of the five Lawrence school board seats to be filled in the April 7 election.

School board President Shannon Kimball on Friday joined Rick Ingram, who filed Thursday, as the only current members of the board to file for re-election so far. They were joined, also Friday, by Lindsey Frye, a member of New York Elementary’s Parent-Teacher Association and site council.

“I’m a parent who wants to take an active role, not only (with) my children, but the city’s children,” she said.

Frye, 34, is a denied medical claims collector for Apria Healthcare in Overland Park. It is her first time running for public office.

“I’m also interested in working with specific boards and trying to hire and attract more teachers of color, so we’re a more diverse school district as far as teachers and staff are concerned,” she said.

Kimball, an attorney, said in a statement that her experience can help the board “navigate the financial challenges that lie ahead.”

“Unfortunately, the dire financial situation at the state level puts at risk the gains that our district has made during my first term on the board,” she said.

Kimball was elected to the board in 2011. She took over as president in 2014.

Ingram, who was not available for comment, was also elected to the board in 2011. He works as a professor of clinical psychology at Kansas University.

Candidates can file paperwork to run for office at the Douglas County Clerk’s office, 1100 Massachusetts St. The forms can be obtained directly from the clerk’s office or on the county’s website, DouglasCountyKS.org.

Board terms for Marcel Harmon, Bob Byers, Randy Masten, Kimball and Ingram expire June 30.

The Lawrence school board twice had to appoint board members over the last year to fill in vacancies. By law, seats that were filled after a vacancy are subject to an election the following year.

One of the seats will be for a two-year term. The other terms will last four years. The board has seven members.

Harmon was appointed to the board last September. Byers was appointed last June, after serving on the board from 2009 to 2012.

If 16 or more candidates file for the school board, a primary will be held March 3.
