25 years ago: All KU vending machines now attached to walls

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 9, 1990:

  • All vending machines at Kansas University had been secured to a wall or floor by Dec. 22, 1989, according to Robert Derby, KU concessions manager. The project, which had cost about $4,000, had bolted KU’s 191 vending machines in an attempt to increase safety and decrease vandalism. The safety project had been implemented in response to the May 7, 1989, death of a KU student who had rocked a pop machine, causing it to fall on top of him.
  • A bond election for the south Lawrence trafficway was on the agenda for this week’s meeting of the Douglas County Commission. Commissioners were planning to discuss and hear public comment on a bond issue for the trafficway, but they were also watching to see what Lawrence city commissioners would decide tonight on scheduling a special election on the issue. City commissioners had previously stated that they favored an April vote.
