100 years ago: Safety issues lead KU to consider moving sledding off streets, to campus hill

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 7, 1915:

  • “Chancellor Strong of the University, the superintendent of the grounds and the city officials are considering the construction of a coasting ground on the University grounds so that the coasting will be taken off the streets and part of the danger eliminated. The place that they plan to have is just south of McCook Field. There is plenty of slope there and there will be no street cars, taxicabs, or hacks there and all can coast there with comparative safety. The matter will be taken up immediately but it is probable that it will not be fixed this season. If this step is taken the commissioners will provide that it shall be unlawful to coast on any street or alley in town.”
  • “The first police court trial of the year 1915 was heard in court this morning. This is the first case in court since December 29, one of the longest periods that has been experienced with a case for some time. Other towns are having more or less trouble but it seems that the people of Lawrence are very peaceful and law abiding for the police officers are on the job day and night and when there is anything on they know about it.”
  • “Suit for the recovery of money from the city was filed in the District court this morning of John B. Garrison. Garrison alleges that he was assigned sixteen blocks from which to haul garbage and he further alleges that he had a contract with the city that he was to receive 50 cents a block as a compensation for his work. He has never received any money from the city and he is bringing suit for $97.50, the balance due him for work done. The city officials allege that Garrison never had a contract with the city and that all the pay he was to receive was to come from the people for whom he hauled garbage.”
  • “The first appearance of the Lawrence High School Basket Ball Team in their new suits will be on Friday night when the team meets the Alumni Team in the High School Gymnasium…. This will be a practice game and will test the strength of this year’s team in comparison with the teams of former years. The boys are working hard for the opening game of the season and are anxious to be in good shape and they want a few hard practices before the opening game.”
  • “Topeka. – Miss Lenna Bressette, state factory inspector, has completed an investigation of the five and ten cent stores in Kansas and finds that the average wage of the girls employed in those stores is only $3 a week and only 111 receive more than $4 a week. Girls employed in department stores make from $6 to $25 a week, she says. Miss Bressette investigated 6,067 cases. She found that 700 receive less than $5 a week, while fifty-three receive more than $25 a week.”
  • “The shutting down of industries and construction work is given as the reason for so many tramps along the Santa Fe. Many of these carry cards and credentials that show they are members of trade unions. Many of these come from the southwest where they say the shutting down of work is throwing many men out of employment.”
