Lawrence’s first baby of the new year arrives

Baby Boy Keim, who came in at 6 lbs, 20 ounces just before 7 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2015, shows off his lungs as he rests in his mother Kristina Keim's arms at Lawrence Memorial Hospital on Friday, Jan. 2, 2015. Kristina and her husband Jason, left, have yet to choose a name because their baby came three weeks earlier than Kristina's due date, which was Jan. 22.

Lawrence’s first baby of 2015 has arrived — without any competition for the title.

Baby Boy Keim, born to parents Jason and Kristina Keim, of Lawrence, was the only baby born on the first day of 2015, Lawrence Memorial hospital spokeswoman Belinda Rehmer said Friday.

The child, whose name has not yet been chosen, was born at 6:58 p.m. Thursday, weighing 6 pounds 2 ounces.

The Keims were not expecting their son to be the first baby of the new year; Kristina Keim’s due date was not until Jan. 22. But when she came into LMH Thursday in labor, she was quickly notified that he could be it.

“It didn’t even cross my mind until we walked in and everyone was getting so excited,” Keim said.

She had completed a full day of work at General Dynamics, where she is employed as a quality specialist, before giving birth Thursday evening. Just as she was gathering up her things and filling out her time card around 4 p.m., it became apparent she would not be going home.

“I went to stand up and my water broke,” she said. “I finished filling out my time sheet and took a vacation day for Friday.”

The baby then came so fast that when the Keims got to the hospital, it was too late to perform a Caesarean section — the baby was in the breech position — or even give Keim any pain medication.

“He came out bottom-first, but the doctor said there was no time to deliver as a C-section,” she said. “It was pretty painful.”

The baby will be the younger brother to 4-year-old Noah, who Keim said is just now coming around to his new role.

“At first, he was not acclimated,” Keim said. “Now he’s getting used to being a big brother.”
