Lawrence’s GaDuGi SafeCenter to receive nearly $40,000 in grant money

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback announced the recipients of the 2015 Federal Sexual Assault Services Program grants this week. Lawrence’s GaDuGi SafeCenter is among the recipients and will receive nearly $40,000 in grant money.

The GaDuGi SafeCeter provides round-the-clock services for anyone in Douglas, Franklin and Jefferson counties who has been a victim of sexual violence.

This will be the sixth year the SafeCenter has received money from this particular grant, said the program’s executive director, Chrissy Heikkila.

“It’s always nice to see support from the governor’s office,” she said.

The money, $39,756 to be exact, will partially fund the facility’s individual therapist, Heikkila said.

“I’d say we treat about 75 individuals a year with that grant money,” she said. “And that’s ongoing therapy.”

Nine organizations across the state received grant money. A total of $267,572 was awarded.
