Man accused of stabbing woman in downtown Lawrence faces felony charge

A transient man faces a felony charge after he was accused of stabbing a woman Saturday in downtown Lawrence.

David Spates, 30, is charged with aggravated battery.

Around 6:30 p.m. Saturday officers were called to a parking lot in the 700 block of Vermont Street for a report of a woman with stab wounds.

The victim, Sharon Horne, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital where she was treated and released.

Douglas County Assistant District Attorney Katy Britton said Horne suffered a deep cut to her neck from a knife. She called the wound “quite a grotesque injury.”

Spates was arrested later Saturday night after officers said he matched the description Horne gave police.

Spates is currently in the Douglas County Jail in lieu of a $75,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 2.
