40 years ago: Workforce to be laid off as Fleetwood Homes closes Lawrence plant

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 21, 1975:

The Fleetwood Homes of Kansas mobile home plant, 807 E. 29th, announced it was closing indefinitely in about three weeks, as soon as the current orders were finished. The plant’s workers were to be laid off and the management reassigned to another Fleetwood Enterprises Inc. plant, according to plans announced by the company this week. The company also said it would suspend production at eight other mobile home plants around the country within the next few weeks. Merrill Petty, general manager of the local plant, said the decision was made because the plants had been operating at a loss. The Lawrence plant had opened in February, 1971, and at one time had boasted 150 employees. The work force had been decreased throughout 1974 as demand for mobile homes had subsided, and today consisted of 45 employees.
