LHS boys roll past Olathe Northwest, 70-34

Lawrence High junior Justin Roberts (5) shows off a little hang time as he shoots a jumper over Olathe Northwest's Tony Omazic (23) and Devin Anctil (24) during their game Friday evening at LHS. The Lions defeated the Ravens, 70-34.

Early in the fourth quarter on Friday night, Lawrence High senior Anthony Bonner caught a pass about 30 feet away from the basket.

After a slight hesitation, Bonner fired away. After his shot clanked off the side of the rim, he turned to LHS boys basketball coach Mike Lewis and gave him a smile.

Lewis couldn’t blame his team for having a little fun in a 70-34 rout of Olathe Northwest at LHS. The Lions wore their red-and-white-striped tear-away pants in pre-game warmups for the first time this season and were loose from the opening tip.

“Those are supposed to be cursed,” senior guard Ben Rajewksi said of the pants. “We were trying to break the curse. But in all seriousness, we knew that was a really good team, and we had to get off to a good start and get after them.”

The Lions (15-1, ranked No. 2) jumped to a 14-5 lead in the first six minutes of the first quarter. Junior point guard Justin Roberts buried a jumper and slashed for a layup, Bonner and Rajewski drained three-pointers, and junior forward Price Morgan hit a pair of free throws.

The Ravens (11-5) closed within seven points in the second quarter, and the Lions responded with an 8-0 run to end the half. LHS forced three turnovers on defense while Bonner, Roberts and senior forward Logan Applegate scored in the stretch.

“You come out and you kind of go, ‘Holy cow, we’re really feeling it,'” Lewis said after his team made nine of 21 threes. “We were making the extra pass and setting our guys up for the open shot. Then we start hitting them, and the momentum just really goes our way.”

After taking a 15-point lead into halftime, Bonner opened the second half with three-pointers on back-to-back possessions, starting a 17-2 run over five minutes. He didn’t stop after that, scoring on a layup-and-the-foul bucket a few minutes later and drilling a three in the final seconds before the third-quarter buzzer.

Morgan also added seven points in the third quarter. The Lions only turned the ball over once throughout the night and limited the Ravens to 29 percent shooting (12-for-41).

“It’s one of the last home games,” said Bonner, who scored a game-high 21 points. “I’ll never have that experience to run out with these guys again or come out of the starting lineup with these guys again. So every play, every second, I’m just cherishing it and having as much fun as I can.”

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Lions emptied their bench, and the hot shooting continued. Junior Anthony Harvey and sophomore Jackson Mallory drilled threes, and senior Tae Shorter made a free throw.

Senior Kyle Hoffman, who entered after the LHS student section chanted his name, made a three-pointer before the final buzzer at the top of the arc.

“That’s awesome. I’ve known Kyle since we were little kids, and he’s worked so hard,” Rajewski said. “To see him come out to hit that shot — it was pure.”

The Lions will travel to Shawnee Mission North at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
