Lawrence police investigating two Thursday armed robberies

Lawrence police are investigating two reports of armed robberies committed Thursday with handguns, Lawrence Police Department spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said Friday.

The first occurred around 7:30 a.m. Thursday, when a 23-year-old woman said she went out to her vehicle parked in front of her home and a man armed with a handgun approached her, McKinley said. The man took the woman’s purse and car keys, then sped away in the victim’s green 2005 Dodge Caravan.

The car was valued at about $5,000, and the victim said her cellphone and a “large sum of money” was in her purse, which the suspect also took, McKinley said.

The suspect was described as a black man about 20 years old, 5-feet-10-inches tall, 160 pounds with dreadlocks and braided hair, McKinley said.

The victim was not injured in the incident. As of Friday afternoon, police had not located the vehicle or suspect, McKinley said.

The second armed robbery occurred Thursday night at O’Reilly Auto Parts, 601 Kasold Drive, McKinley said.

Officers responded to a report of an armed man in a ski mask entering the store just after 9:15 p.m., McKinley said. Witnesses told officers the man demanded cash from employees, who complied.

McKinley said investigators are not releasing the amount of money taken at this point, which he said is standard practice in robbery cases.

The suspect fled the store by foot after the robbery, McKinley said. Officers were unable to locate him. Detectives responded to the scene and helped process evidence and conduct interviews.

No one was injured in the incident, McKinley said, and no arrests had been made as of Friday afternoon.

The suspect in the second robbery is described as a white man, about 5-feet-11-inches tall, 165 pounds and wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, McKinley said.
