Lawrence businessman to spend two years in prison for embezzling about $1 million

A 55-year-old Lawrence man was sentenced to two years in federal prison after admitting to embezzling about $1 million from his company, Pur-O-Zone at 345 N. Iowa St., and his business partners, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said Monday.

Mark W. Elzea pleaded guilty in September to one count of interstate transportation of stolen funds. He will have to pay $619,000 in restitution.

The crime happened when Elzea was controller and part owner of Pur-O-Zone, a Lawrence janitorial and cleaning equipment business, Grissom said. In his plea, Elzea said he began embezzling funds from the business in 2004.

The crime was discovered in May 2014 when a vendor contacted one of Elzea’s partners about not having received a check, Grissom said. The partners then discovered numerous unauthorized checks Elzea signed and made payable to Cardmember Service Chase Bank in Illinois.

A federal booking mug of Elzea was not readily available Monday.
