40 years ago: Two men on the run after kidnapping Baldwin police officer

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 7, 1975:

  • Authorities were searching today in the Kansas City, Kan., area for two men suspected of kidnapping a Baldwin patrolman and holding him at gunpoint for nearly half an hour this morning. The patrolman, Michael Shute, 22, had been released unharmed by his captors near a farmhouse in Douglas County. Warrants had been issued for the two suspects, both Baldwin residents. Shute had stopped a car about 1:30 a.m. for not having license tags and had reportedly told the driver to park the car until tags were obtained. Shute had seen the car again about half an hour later and had stopped it, asking for the driver’s license. The driver had exited the car and had begun to fight the officer, aided by another occupant of the car. The men had then forced Shute into the car and had driven off. The car had been spotted again after Shute’s release at a residence in Wellsville and then again in Kansas City at about 11:30 the following morning. The men were reported to be armed and probably now traveling on foot.
