Winter weather advisory in effect; blowing snow expected Wednesday

A winter weather system is expected to bring gusty winds and 1 to 3 inches of snow to Lawrence and Douglas County on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a winter weather advisory that will be in effect until 4 p.m. Wednesday. Temperatures will start the day in the mid-20s before falling into the teens in the afternoon, with northerly wind gusts up to 30 mph. Around 2 inches of accumulation are likely by Wednesday evening.

Crews from the city of Lawrence have pre-treated all roads and were on hand Wednesday morning to start snow operations, according to a city release. Visit lawrenceks.org/snow for more information, including a look at current conditions from the city’s traffic cameras.

The weather service report says that while the snow will be short lived, periods of moderate snow combined with gusty winds will result in blowing and drifting snow. These conditions may mean reduced visibility and potential near white-out conditions. Use caution when driving, especially on east-west roads.

Temperatures are expected to drop near zero overnight into Thursday with wind chill readings as cold as 5 below. Thursday’s forecast is mostly sunny, with highs in the upper 20s.
