25 years ago: January in Lawrence was warmer, wetter than usual

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 2, 1990:

The numbers were in, and Lawrence had actually received more precipitation than normal during January. The unusually wet and warm month just ended had given Lawrence 1.49 inches of moisture, surpassing the monthly average of 1.11 inches. According to the Kansas University Weather Service, the area’s average high temperature of nearly 53 degrees for January was also far above the normal average high of 38 degrees for the month. The average low temperature of about 31 degrees was also noticeably warmer than the normal low average of almost 19 degrees, according to Rob Edmiston, forecaster for the weather service. Meanwhile, the cold snap in December was beginning to haunt customers of Kansas Public Service in the form of a rate increase. KPS, Lawrence’s natural gas utility, announced the increase this week, saying it would raise the average residential customer’s monthly bills by just under a dollar a month. Ronald D. Jones, a public information officer with KPS, said the extremely cold December weather had created a high demand for gas on the “spot” market, driving up the wholesale price.
