100 years ago: LHS seniors push for free admission for commencement exercises

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 2, 1915:

  • “There is an agitation on the part of the Seniors of the Lawrence High School to have free commencement exercises instead of charging admission at the door as has been the custom. The students claim that it is rather embarrassing to invite friends to attend their graduating exercises and then ask them to pay to see it. The matter was presented to the Board and discussed in their meeting last night, but no decision reached. It is the opinion of some members of the board that the doing away with an admission fee would lower the character of the audience that usually attend this function. Others claim that it would mean that more of the lower classmen would attend and the inspiration would be highly beneficial.”
  • “The ‘pure advertising’ ordinance was taken up by the commissioners this morning and passed. It provides that there shall be no misleading statements in the advertising of any kind or a wrong impression of the name of the firm. This will arrange the advertising so that the people can absolutely rely on the statements made in any kind of advertising of the Lawrence merchants and prices of the cost of goods as well. The merchants will not be allowed to say that there will be a big cut in price of the goods and then mark the cost price up and sell for the regular price…. A resolution was adopted in the meeting to revoke the license of the pool hall owned and operated by T. E. Boone. The reason given in the resolution for the closing of the pool hall was that profane and indecent language had repeatedly been heard there and that drunken parties had repeatedly been seen there…. Mr. Boone appeared before the commissioners this morning in an attempt to stay the execution of the orders, but the commissioners find that he has violated the city ordinance by allowing profane language and drinking, and his efforts were of no avail…. City Attorney Harley said: ‘The pool halls of Lawrence must be in the future be like the wife of Caesar, they must be above suspicion…. We are going to have the pool halls run according to the rules laid down or not at all.'”
  • “With the coming of the first period of open weather work promises to commence in a way not usually experienced so early in the spring, according to contractors in different lines of construction. Ten houses were in the process of erection when work was postponed by the inclement weather. Others are contemplating building at the earliest possible time. Soon the interurban will be in the process of construction…. Later as soon as half the necessary tax is in the treasury of the county, the building of the Kaw river bridge will commence.”
