100 years ago: New school buildings to be ready by next term

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 12, 1915:

  • “C. R. Young promised the school board that the new buildings would, after many delays, be ready to occupy when the next term of school opens in February…. The dedication of these buildings will be held about January 1. Plymouth Congregational church will present the Cordley school with a picture of Dr. Cordley. Mrs. O. W. McAllaster will place a picture of Mr. McAllaster in the McAllaster school and the Lincoln school will be presented with a picture of Lincoln through the kindness of Charles Tucker.”
  • “A municipal Christmas tree, the first of its kind in Lawrence, is to be part of the holiday observances of the city according to plans formulated in an enthusiastic meeting last night of a committee appointed by Mayor Francisco for this purpose. A pine tree in South Park selected by the committee will be trimmed in vari-colored lights and tinsel. On the evening of December 25, with the entire community gathered, Mayor Francisco will touch the button which will flash on the lights. During the forty-five minutes following the illumination of the tree the children of Lawrence will sing the songs of the season. The Haskell band will also be present and aid in the musical program…. While the plan is novel for Lawrence it has been tried with great success in other Kansas cities and towns, in some localities the exercises being extended for several evenings. It is hoped that this may become an annual event and if successful will be extended next year over several days.”
  • “The first fine that Police Judge Henry Albach has imposed since he has been dispensing justice in the city hall for improper driving on the Kaw river bridge was drawn by the driver of a wagon for the Palace of Sweets confectionery this morning. The driver crossed the bridge in both directions traveling faster than a walk, and he was fined $5 as provided by the ordinance.”
  • “An altercation between two attorneys occurred today in the office of the county commissioners. In a dispute over some provisions of the contract for building the new river bridge, one of the attorneys applied a ‘fightin’ word’ to another. Bystanders intervened and there was no fight.”
  • “The city Ford was requisitioned yesterday and today for the use of Commissioner Holyfield, who was taking up samples of milk from Lawrence dairy wagons for analysis in the University laboratories. The analysis will be completed within a short time and the results will be available at Commissioner Holyfield’s office.”
  • “Three wayfarers who had no other place to go were given beds at the city jail last night. There was no disturbance of any sort in town last night and the names of the ‘sleepers’ were the only addition to the jail register.”
