40 years ago: Fast food restaurant suffers second robbery attempt

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 28, 1975:

  • The second armed robbery in less than a year at the Taco Grande restaurant, Ninth and Indiana, was reported to police late Sunday. Police said an armed gunman had entered the restaurant through a back door, demanding money from a counter clerk who was cleaning up the building at the end of the night’s business. The same clerk had also been the victim in an earlier robbery at the restaurant, reported to police Dec. 19, but the two incidents were apparently not related. In the recent offense, the robber had escaped with $843 in cash and $45 in checks, in addition to the clerk’s purse and a purse belonging to another employee.
  • Lawrence’s Human Resources Department and ECKAN Inc. agreed this week to divide responsibility for job placement in this area. ECKAN, 710 Massachusetts Street, was to take over job counseling services formerly provided by the Human Resources department, according to Ray Samuel, human resources director. ECKAN had a staff of trained job counselors and could provide other services to job seekers as well, such as transportation to job interviews, according to ECKAN director Greg Stock. ECKAN was also offering an emergency home rehabilitation and winterization program, using its own federal grants and $10,000 in city revenue-sharing funds.
