40 years ago: Storms bring torrential rains to region

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 26, 1975:

Thunderstorms had affected parts of Missouri and Kansas in the past 24 hours, dumping from 2 to 5 inches of rain and bringing a tornado to the tiny town of Wilmont in southeastern Kansas about eight miles northeast of Winfield. The heaviest rainfall in Liberty, Mo., measured at 5.15 inches, and in Kansas City, flooded streets caused traffic jams. One passenger aboard a Kansas City International Airport bus had been injured when the vehicle went through a guard rail and plunged 50 feet down an embankment. Two youngsters in the Kansas City area had been swept into storm sewers and carried nearly 400 feet before being dumped into creeks, where they were rescued. In Kansas, the heaviest rains fell in the eastern portion of the state. In Lawrence, rainy conditions and slick streets contributed to 16 accidents reported to city police and the Douglas County sheriff’s office.
