40 years ago: More apartments needed to ease student housing demand

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 22, 1975:

With nearly all on-campus housing occupied, the student housing crunch at Kansas University continued. Some Lawrence apartments were available, but “it looks like it’s pretty much going to be a tie between supply and demand,” said Ed Church, manager of the Lawrence Rentals Exchange. Church said he still had about 35 two-bedrooms units for rent but that one- and three-bedroom units were just about gone. “There seems to be a lot more doubling up this year, with three or four students in an apartment, rather than two or three,” Church said. A Journal-World survey this week of major apartment complexes in the city showed few apartments still vacant. Increased KU enrollment and housing demand could lead to another round of apartment construction, a Chamber of Commerce official said today.
