40 years ago: KU housing crunch leads to creative use of laundry rooms

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 21, 1975:

Kansas University was experiencing a record enrollment this year, with perhaps as many as 21,000 students signing up for classes. The resulting crunch in student housing was leading to creative solutions, such as laundry rooms in one residence hall being converted into dormitory housing. “By 2 p.m., we’ll have 18 laundry rooms in McCollum Hall ready for students to live in. We’re taking this step because we don’t want to turn anyone away,” J. J. Wilson, KU housing director, said today. Wilson added that locks would be installed on the doors and furniture would be provided for the rooms. Abdul Fatah, assistant residence hall director at McCollum, said he preferred to describe the rooms as “ironing rooms,” since they didn’t contain any laundering machines. “Really, they’re all right,” Fatah said today. “They have windows and are the same size as regular rooms.”
