Lawrence schools, police report no serious pre-graduation pranks

Nearing the school year’s conclusion in recent years, Lawrence High School and Free State High School students have been known to make headlines with senior pranks and student hijinks.

But while a few parents of area high school students have reported they’ve recently seen stunts like silly-string laden cars and egged windows, school and city officials say they have yet to see pranks that rise to a level of serious concern.

Lawrence school district spokeswoman Julie Boyle said Thursday she was unaware of any such incidents this year.

“It has been our experience that students, in general, respect their school traditions and understand that destruction of property can lead to disciplinary or criminal action,” Boyle told the Journal-World.

Lawrence Police Department spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said Thursday the department’s school resource officers “are not hearing anything out of the norm.”

“We did hear about seniors getting haircuts for graduation, possibly at the mud volleyball game, though I don’t know that is much of a prank,” McKinley explained.

Previous late-in-the-year student hijinks included a 2005 incident when Lawrence High employees discovered “a giant heap of grass clippings” piled outside the building one morning, the Journal-World reported.

In May 2012, seven Lawrence High students were disciplined after police caught them trespassing on school grounds one night in an attempt at a school prank. Nothing had been damaged or taken, police said at the time.
