Website features outdoor activities in Kansas

Kansas has new hub for outdoor opportunities with GetOutdoorsKansas.

Kansas Wildscape Foundation and the Kansas Trails Council, both nonprofit organizations dedicated to promoting active, outdoor lifestyles in Kansas, have partnered to create GetOutdoorsKansas. The free online resource, at getoutdoorskansas.org, allows users to post or search for healthy outdoor opportunities for Kansans of all ages and interests.

“GetOutdoorsKansas is an innovative tool to promote healthy, outdoor events and activities to current and new audiences. Communities and organizations can promote outdoor activities locally and statewide with ease and at no cost,” said Lynn Gentine, project director.

The website also has a trail mapping feature, developed specifically for the GetOutdoorsKansas project with support from the Westar Green Team, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism and various volunteers. Site visitors will find a variety of different activities within a specified radius of any city and visitors will also be able to locate information on trails across Kansas.

“Currently there are over 1,000 miles of trails on the website and the trail team continues to record various pedestrian, bike, equestrian and water trails across the state with the latest GPS technology available,” said Mike Goodwin, project trail coordinator.

Funding for this project was provided in part by the Sunflower Foundation: Health Care for Kansans, a Topeka-based philanthropic organization with the mission to serve as a catalyst for improving the health of Kansans.
