Lawrence Parks and Rec to host canine flying disc competition

The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department will host the 2015 Skyhoundz Local Championship D/A and Freestyle, a disc competition for dogs.

The event will take place at 2 p.m. May 3 at South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St. Registration will start at 1:30 p.m. on the day of the event and there is no entry fee. Novice and veteran competitors are welcome, as are both mixed-breed and purebred dogs.

There will be a distance and accuracy competition, where competitors will earn points for basic throws and catches, as well as bonus points for mid-air catches. There will also be a freestyle event. All competitors will receive a Hyperflight K-10 competition standard flying disc, and the top three finishers will receive awards.

Members of the Kansas City Disc Dogs will be available to help teach dogs the basics of the sport. A mini-clinic will be held after the competition as well.

Volunteers are needed to assist in judging the competition. A limited number of judges will be selected.

This event is free and open to the public.
