Public safety fair to feature free bicycle helmets for kids, other activities

Children will have a chance this weekend to get a free, properly fitted bicycle helmet and learn safety tips.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical is hosting its annual Helmet Fair Saturday in parking lot 58, west of Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium, a city news release said. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. children 15 and younger will be given bicycle helmets while supplies last.

Those in attendance can also have their bicycles inspected and explore the Safe Ride Course. Throughout the fair, public safety staff will be teaching bicycle safety tips, trail etiquette, booster seat safety and swimming safety.

The fair is free to attend, but children should be accompanied by a parent or guardian, the release said. The Hy-Vee Hawk Zone, with family-friendly inflatables, face painting, music and appearances by Big Jay and Baby Jay will take place at the same time.

Both events will be followed by the KU Spring Football Scrimmage at 1 p.m. in Memorial Stadium, the release said.
