Baldwin police department warns of counterfeit money

? The Baldwin City Police Department is warning residents, especially those at local businesses, look over paper currency after several counterfeit bills have been passed in the community.

Baldwin City Police Chief Greg Neis said counterfeit $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills have been passed in the community in the last week. There has also been reports of counterfeit bills passed in neighboring communities, he said.

“With the advent of color printers, we see a lot more of this,” he said. “The paper won’t feel right. If it feels funny, look it over.”

Newer bills of denominations of more than $1 will have a vertical bar when held to up to a light, which won’t appear on fake currency made from printers, Neis said.

The department has developed a lead on a suspect captured on a security camera.

“We’ve identified a suspect, and we’re pursuing that,” Neis said. “We were able to ID the tag number and vehicle. That’s led us to a suspect known for doing this before. We’re pretty sure we’re heading down the right path.”

His department is working with other area departments on the case, and it has notified the U.S. Secret Service, Neis said.
