Retired Lawrence firefighter killed in Reno County crash

A 52-year-old former Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical firefighter died late Saturday after a one-vehicle accident near Turon, Reno County Sheriff’s Capt. Darrian Campbell said Tuesday.

Daniel Clouse, of Lawrence, was driving northbound on South Brownlee Road, about a mile south of Turon, around 11:30 p.m. Saturday when the accident occurred, Campbell said. Turon is about 70 miles west of Wichita.

Campbell said Clouse crossed the center line, then overcorrected and drove into a ditch, where the vehicle struck a power pole and flipped onto its top. Clouse was not wearing a seat belt, Campbell said.

Medics pronounced Clouse dead at the scene after first responders tried to extricate him from the vehicle, Campbell said.

It is unknown at this time whether alcohol was involved, but an autopsy is underway in Wichita, Campbell said.
