40 years ago: Thieves take doorknob from Watkins Museum

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 13, 1975:

The portals of justice had received a blow from thieves this week, according to a news item. Police said a man had entered the Elizabeth M. Watkins Community Museum to take photographs of the building’s stained glass windows and had been spotted later in the chamber of District Court Judge James W. Paddock, on the second floor. After the man and his companion had been chased out, it was discovered that the ornate 19th-century doorknob on Paddock’s door was missing. Its value was set at $25, but authorities said it was irreplaceable.
