40 years ago: Governor repeals recent two-license plate law

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 12, 1975:

In Topeka this week, Governor Robert F. Bennett signed into law a bill repealing the state’s new two-license plate law. Bennett had asked for the bill repealing the two-tag law in effect only since Jan. 1. The state had spent more than $600,000 to have the plates for the front and back of vehicles manufactured, but Bennett had called for a repeal because of the future price tag of the program. Vehicle owners with last names ending in A, B, and C had already been issued the double tags and could use them for the remainder of the year, but those applying for plates from now on, under the staggered-alphabetical system in place, would not receive them. The state had not yet decided what to do with the front tags already printed. Elton Lobban, state director of motor vehicles, said his department had received offers from collectors, from recyclers, and even from one state senator who had offered to buy all the extra tags for his county.
