25 years ago: Traffic engineers to review congestion at Riverfront Mall entrance

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 10, 1990:

In the wake of this week’s soft opening of the Riverfront Mall and the resulting congestion at Sixth and New Hampshire streets, city officials were planning to meet with traffic engineers to review both pedestrian and vehicle traffic patterns and to try to correct problems. Acting City Manager Mike Wildgen cited the public’s unfamiliarity with the new parking garage and said increased signage at the facility would likely help decrease the congestion. “Those were first-day, maybe first-week kinds of events,” Wildgen said. “From that, we’ve got about six things we’re going to continue to look at here.” Some options being considered were restricting left turns out of the parking structure, placement of an additional crosswalk near the main entrance to the ground-level parking, and allowing vehicles to continue west at Sixth and Massachusetts from two lanes. The current set-up had one of the lanes designated for right turns only, and many cars had been backed up in the single lane allowed for westbound traffic.
