100 years ago: Lawrence schoolchildren to be granted half-holiday to help with annual Cleanup Days

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 6, 1915:

  • “The city officials are making an especial effort to get all of the people of the town interested in the clean-up days which will come on the 16th and 17th of April. The welfare officer has taken a special interest in the matter and he is working to get everyone in the spirit of the time of the year so that Lawrence can truly be said to be the very cleanest town of the state. The plan of the officials now is to get all of the cleaning done before those days, but not later than that date for the city teams will be busy on that day and they will not be at that work more than the two days and it will be necessary to have the trash piled near the alley so that it will be accessible from the alley. Welfare Officer Boltz appeared before the Board of Education last night to ask them that a half holiday be granted on the sixteenth of April, so that all of the children could spend that half day in helping to clean up about their homes. He requests that all of the children of the city help in this movement to make the city more attractive and sanitary and a better place to live as well as a place that speaks for itself. He recommends that the people pay the children to help with the work…. The welfare officer wishes to impress the fact that vacant lots are included in the clean-up movement as well as the residences. Many of the worst places in town are on vacant lots and they need attention badly. They have been neglected for years and the condition is not in any way sanitary.”
  • “One of the heaviest ballots was cast in the election today that has ever been cast in Lawrence. The weather was favorable during the morning and part of the afternoon but the clouds of the afternoon kept few people at home. There being four issues before the people today and all of importance the people were anxious to get to the polls and the voting was good most of the day…. The outcome of the election will be announced as soon as possible.”
  • “The teachers for the Lawrence schools will now be elected at the May meeting of the Board of Education instead of in June as formerly, according to action taken in the board meeting last night…. This change is made both for the benefit of the teachers as well as the board, giving the teachers not retained a better chance to obtain other positions and the board a greater field to choose from.”
